Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Xbox Gamertags, PSN IDs, and naming rules.
An Xbox Gamertag can be a maximum of 12 characters long. A PlayStation Network (PSN) Online ID can be up to 16 characters long. For PC platforms like Steam, the limit is generally 16 to 32 characters. Our Namezly generator automatically adjusts the name length based on the platform you select.
It depends entirely on the platform. Xbox allows single spaces but strictly prohibits underscores (
_) and special symbols. PlayStation allows underscores and hyphens (-) but strictly prohibits spaces. PC/Steam is the most flexible, allowing spaces, underscores, and aesthetic symbols (like ツ).
On Xbox, yes! Microsoft uses a modern system where you can choose a taken name, but they will append a unique 4-digit suffix (e.g.,
Ghost#1234) to differentiate you. However, on PlayStation (PSN), your Online ID must be 100% globally unique—no two players can have the same name.
Both Microsoft (Xbox) and Sony (PlayStation) allow you to change your gamertag for free the first time. Any subsequent changes after your first free rename will cost money (usually around $9.99 per change). Always double-check your generated name before confirming!
An OG (Original Gangster) gamertag is typically a very short, real-dictionary word (like Strike or Nova) with absolutely no numbers. A Sweaty or Tryhard gamertag is usually a short, aggressive word, often utilizing classic wrappers (like
xX_name_Xx) or leetspeak (replacing letters with numbers, like V1p3r).
Adding TTV (Twitch.tv) or YT (YouTube) to your name lets other players know you are livestreaming. Clan tags (like
[FaZe]) show you belong to a specific gaming team. You can easily add these to your ideas using the "Streamer Tag" and "Clan Mode" checkboxes in our generator.
Generally, no. Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Steam are completely separate networks. You would need to manually register the exact same name on all three platforms individually, provided it is available on each one. (Note: Games with internal accounts, like Call of Duty or Epic Games, allow a single cross-platform display name).
If a gamertag is unavailable, it is either already claimed by an active/inactive player, or it violates the platform's strict Code of Conduct (e.g., containing profanity or offensive terms). If your favorite name is taken, try using our tool to add aesthetic modifiers, numbers, or leetspeak to make it unique!
